What Is The Future of Solar Energy in The Philippines?

On March 25, 2024, Aboitiz Solar Power, Inc. said they have appointed AFRY as owner's engineer for the construction of the 172 MWp solar plant, including grid interconnection works. The project, located in Negros Occidental province, Philippines, is designed to deliver renewable energy to the Visayas grid.


Aboitiz Solar Power, Inc. is a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), and the Calatrava project is one of five projects in its solar power portfolio. The portfolio has nearly 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects in the pipeline and plans to build at least 3,700 MW by 2030.


And, the Calatrava project, which covers about 143 hectares of relatively flat terrain with rolling hillsides, will use fixed ground-mounted solar installations and is planned to be connected to the Calatrava substation via a 230kV voltage connection.


The company will play a key role in the project, says AFRY. Project management assistance, design review service will be supported during the construction and commissioning of the solar power plant, including interconnection facilities to the Calatrava substation. Power is scheduled to be delivered to the grid by the end of 2024.


In recent years, the global energy transition has become imminent as the energy crisis has worsened due to changes in the international situation. The Philippines, one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, is still experiencing a gradual recovery of the local economy and a new round of growth in domestic energy consumption amidst a rebound in domestic demand and favorable external trends.


The Philippines reformed its power market at the beginning of the 21st century and has been implementing the Renewable Energy Act since 2008 in an effort to change the country's power mix in line with the concept of sustainable energy development. However, its power supply is still dominated by fossil fuels (especially coal).

In the latest National Renewable Energy Plan (NREP) released by the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE), the Philippines is targeting a renewable energy share of more than 35% by 2030, rising to 50% by 2040.


In terms of energy reform progress, according to the latest data from the Philippine Department of Energy (DoE), commercial and industrial PV projects under government-issued contracts in 2023 achieved a 26% increase from the previous year.In 2022, there were 965 RE projects with a total installed capacity of 80,396.61 MW.In 2023, the number of RE projects grows to 1,220 projects, with a potential installed capacity up to 134,813.79 MW. The local solar energy development prospect is very broad, and there is huge space.
